As a dentist I can tell you that the yellow color on teeth are stains from not properly brushing daily. Food, soda, coffee, tea and cigarette smoke are just a few of the causes of the yellow stains. Proper brushing after each meal or at least twice per day will prevent most of this staining.

It happens, especially if you drink a lot of dark colored liquids like dark sodas and coffee, or if you smoke all of which cause stains.

To get rid of them try a whiteneing toothpaste or crest white strips. You can also use baking soda. Either apply a small amount to an old toothbrush and brush with it, and then follow up by brushing with your regular toothbrush and toothpaste, or mix a little bit of baking soda with warm water and use it as a rinse, then brush as normal.

Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water is said to work too.

Otherwise, if you find a way to get them white, the yellow will remain under the brackets and you will have small yellow spots you your teeth when the braces are removed.

If you wait until they come off, then you will be able to get the entire tooth clean.

Unfortunately you cannot whiten with braces on. The whitening agent will not be able to get under where the brackets have been cemented onto the teeth. If you do use a product you run the risk of have different colored rectangles on the center of your teeth when the brackets are removed. Once you braces are removed have your teeth cleaned and then whiten them. The best thing to do is have regular dental visits to remove the build up (stain, tartar, and plaque) that gets trapped so easily with them on. Another good idea in addition to regular brushing, flossing (using a proxybrush, etc) is to use an over the counter fluoride rinse or one prescribed to you by your orthodontist to reduce the likelyhood of new cavities or the beginnings of them (decalcification) while the braces are on...Sorry I don%26#039;t have any other options for you!

Tooth color actually comes from within the tooth, not the surface. Many things affect tooth colour, including food, beverages, which stain, and certain medicines that discolor the tooth from inside.

Most whitening toothpastes that you get at, say, Walgreens, have extremely mild bleaches or scrubbing agents that remove surface staining only.

Chances are your teeth are yellow from the inside and the only person who can whiten them are your dentist.

Wait until you%26#039;re older, save up, and have them properly whitened. Too much whitening toothpaste can actually be bad for your teeth.

I want to know how to make friends. I am 20 yrs old, there is nothing mentally wrong with me, i have yellow teeth, so i do not smile wide and i do not have the money to bleach my teeth, i have a thick african accent, i have a stutter problem and i am shy. I am not good at sports because my father never let me play. I have a good looking face, i have noticed lots guys and girls staring at me, i have been told i am good looking by both sexes. I have a goofy personality, which only shows when i get to know someone. In highschool, lots of girls liked me but i was too shy and was too afraid to talk to them. I was a loner in highschool because of my problems. People seem to naturaly like me, and want to be friends with me.

My biggest problem now is i do not know how to act in social conditions. How do i make friends. I dont want to be somebodies boring friend who they dont want around. How do i make a conversation that lasts long? All i can do is question and answer type talks

Reply:the best advice i can give you is... stop caring what everyone else thinks!! you just do you! do what makes you happy and dont be shy.. your an adult now and you dont have anyone to impress. everyone you are hanging around now should be mature enough to be able to see past the physical things and see you for you. you just need to have better self esteem and everyone else will notice that.

My advice can sound strange but it will actually work. When you go to social places have a few drinks of alcohol and that will relax your nerves and you will feel free to say anything and therefore for others be a more interesting person. Of course I don%26#039;t mean completely wasted lol.

Reply:Get involved in social activities where you can get a chance to meet people. When talking to people, take an interest in them genuinely. Asking them questions about themselves opens them up to a conversation.
Reply:The only way to do it is to be confident. Forget about your teeth. I%26#039;m not going to lie and say people don%26#039;t notice those things, but there are people who don%26#039;t, but as long as you are hung up on such things, everyone you meet will notice how self conscious you are. Everyone has things about them they are not satisfied with. Some people think they are fat, others have acne, and I%26#039;m really short. Just get over it and be confident about your good qualities. When you can afford it, get some teeth whitening strips or something.

But just forget about your faults and make sure everyone you meet has a chance to see your good qualities and chances are they won%26#039;t even think about things like your teeth. If they do, they are too shallow to deserve your friendship anyway.

Reply:Well I make friends by being myself.. If your goofy like me just say stuff u usually say.. I moved to michigan by my self to go to school and i knew no one but i made friends easy by talking.. All you really have to do is talk.. What I did was just say stuff i was thinkin.. if my professor said sumthing stupid i would blurt out thats stupid and that would usually start a converation.. or i would just talk.. Reply:It sounds like the real problem isn%26#039;t your teeth, stutter, or accent, but your self esteem. If people naturally like you, then what is there to be ashamed of? You are who you are if people don%26#039;t like it, tough!! You should just learn to relax and expand your comfort zone. See if you can find something online about a guy named Lou Dobbs. He teaches people how their minds work and this can help you learn to expand your comfort zone so that you feel more comfortable in situations that would normally make you nervous. Oh, and about making conversation. You said you have an african accent. Were you raised in Africa? If so, try telling stories about your life there. That seems like a pretty interesting conversation.

If it helps remind yourself about your good qualities. People seem to like you the way you are so roll with that. If you%26#039;re having difficulty engaging conversations talk about things you%26#039;re really into or banter about common subject manner for more casual conversations (movies, sports, the typical stuff...).

No matter how much i brush and floss my teeth are dull and yellow. Are there any simple home remedies for a better smile?

Reply:are you bulimic? the acid from the stomach lining yellows and rotts teeth, which is difficult to fix with brushing and flossing.

if not, try crest white strips, whitening toothpaste with peroxide, or if you have the money you can get them professionally whitened. as far as home remedies, put baking soda in your toothpaste. also stay away from dark beverages like coke, coffee, and black tea.

Reply:Avoid dark colored drinks such as coffee, tea, or sodas. If you must have any of these drinks, then sip through a straw. Also don%26#039;t smoke. These things are the worst for staining your teeth.

But a way to get your teeth whiter, I%26#039;ll go by most expensive to least expensive:

1) Have professional bleaching done at a dental office. There are a couple of different ways to do this. Through in office laser whitening or your dentist can make you customized bleaching trays which you do yourself at home. You leave the trays on for about an hour a day until you achieve the desired result and then maintain it about once or twice a week. Depending on where you live it can be costly. Bleaching runs anywhere from $300 to around $700 depending on what you choose and insurance does not cover any of it b/c it%26#039;s considered cosmetic.

2) Crest White Strips Professional which can only be purchased through a dental office as well. It contains more bleach than the traditional Crest White Strips you buy at the store. In my area, a box sells for $45 for a 30 day supply. The results aren%26#039;t as good as in office bleaching but they are great for the price!

3) Crest White Strips that you can buy at your local store. They run about $25 for a 30 day supply. You won%26#039;t notice a huge difference but possibly a shade lighter. As far as other over the counter bleachin systems, Crest White Strips are the best.

If you want a total make over, you can also get veneers and get the shade you want. But that%26#039;s talking thousands of dollars! I don%26#039;t think you want to go that extreme.

AND whitening toothpastes don%26#039;t really have enough peroxide in to make a difference at all!

Just to let you know, I am a dental assistant so I do know what I%26#039;m talking about! Hope this helps you.

during age, dentine (tooth structure under the enamel) not getting more yellow. it is still in the same color (light yellow). Enamel actually not totally white, but its also translucent. During age and wearing process, enamel will get thinner, and because its translucency, teeth will looks like more yellow.

Reply:Well your teeth can get yellow if you drink coffee a lot. I would reccommend using Crest Whitestrips. They are guranteend to keep your teeth whiter for 12 months. I have used white strips and they do work and i do not belive they cause cancer.

It can be made worse if you drink alot of dark drinks, coffee, grape juice, red wines, blueberries etc. Also smoking and not taking proper care of your teeth, brushing and flossing everyday will speed the process along. You can whiten teeth with over the counter products or have your dental office suggest some whitening procedures. If you have any tooth colored fillings or crowns esp. in the front then you can%26#039;t whiten these. All you will do is whiten your natural tooth structure, and then the fillings and crowns will be the same color, sometimes making it more noticeable. If you plan to whiten talk to your dentist or hygienist they can give you the best information based on your teeth and dental needs.

I used Crest Whitening toothpase... and it improved the color of my teeth.

And now, I am trying to drink less and less soda (Coke and Pepsi) to help my teeth not to become yellow again. Unlike back then, I drink coke and pepsi everyday.

But then there are times that I really want to drink Coke.

Now, when is the coke too much for the color of the teeth? I drank three glasses in a week already, alternate days then I would brush my teeth right after.

It is good to brush your teeth after drinking anything sugary. I don%26#039;t know how much is too much for drinking coke but it sounds like you aren%26#039;t drinking an excessive amount. Other things that can discolor your teeth are smoking, red wine, and coffee so make sure you are avoiding those too. Your gums could hurt from the whitening toothpaste, I have heard of that causing sensitivity. Good luck!
Reply:Well its gud u avoid food tat causes staining of teeth. but wat u hve bn doin abt ur drinkin of coke n pepsi n thn brushing ur teeth is not gud. cos these drinks n other drinks such as orange juice n lemon juice r acidic n therefore would cos erosion of ur teeth. whn u immediately brush ur teeth after takin acidic drinks, it would abrade ur enamel slowly as the acid makes the outer layer of enamel softer. so tips for takin acidic drinks is dont keep them in ur mouth for too long (some pple like to swish the drink around in their mouth). reduce the frequency of intake of such drinks. n rinse ur mouth after drinkin, but do not brush ur teeth after taking such drinks.

1. salt water rinses can help to improve the health of inflammed gums - wont be of any benefit in a healthy mouth 2. the formula you describe is likely to be highly abrasive to tooth structure 3. since when does yellow teeth mean unhealthy gums?! 4. %26quot;Fluoride doesnt do crap for your teeth%26quot; - ever heard of fluorapatite or the effects of fluoride on bacteria? - no, didnt think so.

- to the OP. Most over the counter pastes etc can be abrasive and (mostly) only good for removing surface staining. (that said, Crest strips are supposed to be v good/safe but I%26#039;ve not used them). If the discolouration is %26quot;within%26quot;, then you will need %26quot;proper%26quot; bleaching agents - see your dentist.
Reply:Save your money and do this; take some baking soda and wet your toothbrush, put some baking soda in a little glass and add a few drops of water and hydrogen peroxide. Brush vigorously. Do this two times per day. You should see a difference in a week or so. Don%26#039;t continue to do this, it%26#039;s a bit hard on the enamel as all tooth whitening products are, so use it maybe once a month once you have the yellow gone.
Reply:A slight modification to the last answer I guess, but, what I%26#039;ve always done it use half and half baking soda and salt. It does not harm your teeth however. They are both water soluable and are no worse then the crap they use in toothpaste.The advantage to the salt is it toughens the gums up and makes them healthy. If you have yellow teeth then your gums probably aren%26#039;t very healthy from whatever it was that made them (your teeth) yellow in the first place. But the peroxide won%26#039;t hurt your teeth either if you want to add that. It%26#039;s not the same stuff they use in tooth whitening products. BTW simply use this in place of toothpaste - fluoride doesn%26#039;t do crap for your teeth, it%26#039;s actually bad for you along with the aluminum powder they use in toothpaste. Look it up. If you are concerned there may be something wrong with your teeth, get them checked out before you whiten. Unless you%26#039;re having pain, you probably don%26#039;t have anything wrong. If this is the case, a Dentist can whiten your teeth in one or two visits.

Most of the time, just one visit. But people with severe and/or stubborn stains may need a second visit. Do you know that it costs about 400-500 dollars to get them whitened by a Dentist? You can do it yourself at home in several treatments for a week or two and get them pretty white. If so, there are plenty of effective self whitening kits to choose from. I forget the name, but there%26#039;s one where you use a blue light after you apply gel to a mouthpiece. This makes the gel work much faster and you can achieve white teeth sooner, in about a week. Whatever you decide, good luck!

I think you have the better part of the bargain although your teeth are naturally yellow they can be whitened were as mine cannot be strengheed . Just save up for the whitening treatment in the meantime you can slowly whiten them but perhps not as white as a clinibcal treament

Try this Bicarbonate of Soda mixed with 30 vol peroxide brush the teeth with this . The soda soaks below the surface and the peroxide whitens when carried through by the soda.

Saltwater is a time-honored mouthwash and cleanser, also. It would be interesting to know if there are any studies done on the long-term effects of each of these types of ingredients.

the dentin part of all teeth are inherently yellow in color and the enamel portion is clear or whitish. many times the enamel is thin, thinning, or worn, which shows the %26#039;yellow%26#039; dentin part more. but at age 15, it%26#039;s more than likely staining.

staining is done either on the inside of the tooth or the outside of the tooth. the inside of the tooth is stained when your teeth are developing and probably when you were just a baby. medications can stain our teeth as babies as the teeth develop. there is nothing you can do as far as brushing and white strips for this type of staining.

the outside staining is done by coffee, smoking, and foods. the good news is that brushing, flossing, and white strips will help this type of staining. i rec%26#039;d ppl to use the strips on the front lower teeth for one week and then compare them to the upper and see if there%26#039;s a difference and is the difference something you like. many times the strips can cause sensitivity, spotting, etc. which doesn%26#039;t outweigh white white teeth.

the last thing to note about yellow teeth is your race. i know it sounds weird but Africans tend to have yellower teeth then other people with everything held constant. obviously, there nothing can be done. no biggie. it%26#039;s just the way teeth are.

if your really looking for whiter teeth, then see a dentist about some veeners for the front uppers. they can run about 1000-200 bucks a tooth and you%26#039;ll probably want to have at least 4 done.

be happy that there%26#039;s no else wrong with you teeth. a cavity can really hurt and having metal fillings is really ugly.

ok so when i was young while my teeth were growing I used to take a lot of antibiotics since i was a sick child.

i was gonna say the same about rubbing some baking soda on your teeth to whiten them, you can also rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide, ive heard strawberries can whiten your teeth as well if u cut them in half and rub them over your teeth but i dont know how effective that is, you can also get a whitening kit from walgreens like the crest white strips or a whitening gel. You could also go to a general dentist for a cleaning, my dentist charges only $25 for a cleaning, so do some hunting and find a dentist who does it for cheap.

Reply:you could but you should only do it for a week or so. hydrogen peroxide breaks barrier which protects your teeth, in order to whiten them. this, in turn, can lead to damaging your teeth. whitening teeth and harming teeth is a fine line, which is why when you use the strips, it is only for an allotted period of time (one to two weeks).

if you are going to do this, make sure while you%26#039;re doing it, use a toothpaste that has extra fluoride in it to help build up your teeth%26#039;s defenses and then continue using it when you%26#039;re done.

I am 13 and have yellow teeth. I brush after every meal possible and before I go to bed. I don%26#039;t want to use the expensive stuff. Smoking will stain your teeth, so will coffee. Try Baking Soda, I use it. It works, and it will not harm you if you swallow some people take it for upset stomach. It will work and it%26#039;s inexpensive.

My 12 month old has horrible breath! we do and have always brushed her teeth but it doesnt help. it also looks like there is no enamel on her front 2 teeth.they are kinda yellow. they feel bumpy and rough. her bottom teeth are white but 2 back molars are yellow and it wont brush or scrape off. recently she has a fever and breath got worse so i think she may had strep throat because my other kids had to have their tonsils out by age 3. but she isnt always sick so whats up with the breath?? its bad! will her teeth be better once adult ones come in?

Pediatrician first due to the fever and then the dentist, unless the doctor can give you an answer.

The odor may be from something eaten or gastrointestinal problems. The doctor can diagnosis this with out the added trip to a pedodontist for the teeth.

As mentioned by other responders, do stop the juice/milk bottle at night; only water is recommended to preserve the enamel on the teeth and prevent decay. You should also make sure to brush or wipe the teeth before bedtime this is to remove any plaque that can cause damage to the enamel if left through out the night.

Reply:She probably needs to go to the doctor and the dentist. The doctor will let you know if its strep-throat and what to do about that and if its affecting her breath. The dentist could probably tell you whats going on with her teeth and what you could do to fix it. It kinda sounds like baby bottle mouth, does she go to bed with a bottle of milk/juice? If so, you need to STOP that! If she takes a bottle to bed, ONLY put WATER in it!! Very important or its gonna ruin her permanent teeth also.

Reply:Yellow teeth are hereditary. At home kits are never going to get them white. Even an expensive treatment (like Britewhite) from your dentist will only make them lighter yellow if they are very yellow to start, but perhaps might make a difference. A consulation would inform you if it were viable. Veneers are the only way to get truly white teeth if your teeth are, indeed, quite yellow to start. Thousands and thousands of dollars..... soz.....

Try the crest whitenting kits (the strips witht eh tooth paste and mouthwash). I used it over this christmas and there was a dramatic difference within days using them twice a day. Other brands work too, but for all of them, i advice a whitening mouth wash and toothpaste. The tooth paste will help scrub away some of the plaque and the mouth wash helps get in the spaces better than just the strips.

if you want a more permenant result, and quicker, you can always go to your dentist and see what s/he recommends. either by giving a prescribed mouth guard and whitening gel or getting Zoom done (with a blue light that helps penetrate the whitening gel quicker).

make an appointment....also, arm and hammer advanced whitening works really well on my teeth...i usually get a lot of compliments. you might have to use a whitening toothpaste for awhile till you see results...another suggestion is to get the colgate (i think its colgate) whitening stuff...it would be easy for you to use because its like a little brush (the size of a nail polish brush) and you can paint it on your teeth around your braces. that stuff works great.
Reply:I have braces and have the same problem and I use baking soda, I put water on my tooth brush then I dip it to a baking soda and brush with that then toothpaste but like someone else said on here it may leave a yellow mark where the glue is personally I rather have my teeth white while I have the braces on then use the baking soda when I get them off then it will take care of the yellow stain due to the glue. just dont swallow the baking soda its nasty and rinse your mouth really good!

actually, the more closer to orange, the healthier they are, i beleive. and its normal, just the color they are. i guess, if you really didnt want the teeth yellow, you could make him unhealthy........really really really unhealthy, but thats not nice, its cruel, so dont do that, lol.

Hi,

I have a terrible case of awful yellow teeth, is there any teeth whitening formula that works? what%26#039;s the best. I don%26#039;t smoke or drink coffee and i brush my teeth twice a day, so i don%26#039;t know why their so awful looking! Please any suggestions would be much appreciated!! :-)

Reply:they probably aren%26#039;t as yellow as you think, all those people on TV have had those porcelain cast put on and in a few years will deeply reget it and probably be wearing falsies by there 50s. i don%26#039;t suggest using any of those whitening products they just take all the enamel off your teeth making them over sensitive and not really creating much of a change, but i do know a way to make them look whiter for a cheaper and more effective look and feel. wet your tooth brush and dip it in a cup of baking soda keep it at your sink, morning and night. youll see a difference in a week. it the best way.

My teeth are yellow due to when i was young i took an excessive amounts of different medicines to cure my sicknesses and so it made my teeth yellow, what can i do to make it LESS yellow ( i know i cant make it white unless i bleach it )

is there anything i can do to make it LESS yellow for life? unlike those white strips which only last about a year or less

I use a Sonicare toothbrush and it does help keep food stains down to a minimum. I advise 1) Get a Sonicare to keep food stains down, 2) see your dentist regularly for cleanings and 3) inquire then to see if there is something you can do to enhance your smile so that you don%26#039;t feel like you have to not smile for the camera.

I have been looking into the mirror and noticing my teeth they were turning yellow! I took a picture of myself and you could see a yellow blur were my teeth are! I need to clean them. I have a scrapper to get like the chunks out, a electronic tooth brush with these modes,

Reply:Keep brushing, the teeth wont turn white after a couple nights of brushing. Keep brushing after each meal on a daily basis and before you go to bed which is really important. Not smoking,drinking strong color juice will also help. Try buying whiting strips, dont sure if they work but Crest makes them. Good luck and give it a few weeks.

I%26#039;m 15, and my teeth are pale yellow no matter what I do. They%26#039;ve been like that for as long as I can remember, and I brush twice daily, but it doesn%26#039;t seem to make a difference. Tooth discoloration has nothing to do with the strength of your teeth. It can be caused by neglect, vitamins taken as a baby, or just hereditary.
